We can gain great contemplative insight into today and tomorrow by reading Tim’s compilation of his upbringing in Pittsburgh’s Mount Oliver and America’s heartland in an era of values and striving. He does it with humor, pathos, and the skills of the accomplished storyteller.—Robert Fragasso, chairman and CEO of Fragasso Financial Advisors
Communications professional Tim Hayes previously tackled the world of business in his first book, Jackass in a Hailstorm Adventures in Executive Communication. Now, he’s going back to the beginning and sharing stories from his childhood growing up in the “Steeltown” of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and its Mount Oliver neighborhood. His stories take you along with him as he spends an idyllic childhood, survives eight years of Catholic school, and takes on the radically new world of high school.
Hayes shows how childhood moments taught him the lessons he has carried with him for the rest of his life. His stories will inspire you to think back to your experiences growing up in your own hometown!
A portion of the proceeds of Growing Up Giffin will be donated to economic development efforts supporting the Mount Oliver community.
Growing Up Giffin Reflections on a Happy Steeltown Boyhood eBook Tim Hayes
Tim's book is a delightful compilation of reminiscence of the youth of a city child growing up in the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s. Fortunately for me, I grew up in nearby the location of this story and the memories brought back vividly direct images of my childhood as well. The reader should not limit his or herself to having grown up in this area. Anyone growing up in this time period can find events to spawn his or her own memories. For a child of a time period thereafter, it is a wonderful contemporary historic peek at a life lead before the digital age. As for those over 70, it is a memory of the days of raising their own families, back when most felt safe in letting their children run and explore the neighborhood. Thank you Tim for taking me back on your journey, and therefore helping me remember my own.Product details

Growing Up Giffin Reflections on a Happy Steeltown Boyhood eBook Tim Hayes Reviews
"Growing Up Giffin" is a lovely trip down memory lane - this sweet collection of short stories will take you back to your own childhood, when the corner store was the social hub of the neighborhood, the crazy kid down the street kept everyone on their toes, and the magic of the 4th of July wasn't over until you and your buddies collected the spent shell casings from the military salutes at the parade. The perfect book for anyone who loves to reminisce - "Growing Up Giffin" will help you remember your own family stories, so you can share them too!
Highly recommended for milestone birthdays, graduations, Fathers' Day, or anytime you'd like to go back home again )
Studies show that nostalgia is good for us...it makes us feel warm and fuzzy, kind of like sipping on a cup of tea or hot chocolate...that being the case, take a few sips of "Growing up Giffin" and you'll be soothed by not only the stories -- as they stoke your own childhood recollections -- but the writing, which goes down so smooth that you'll want to finish in one sitting...but do yourself a favor and slowly savor the sips. Pittsburgh history never tasted so good!
This is a fun read -- enjoyed every page. It's a compilation of short essays -- taken mostly from author Tim Hayes' youthful experiences that skillfully tapped into my own memories. I could relate to baking potatoes in a fire pit outside with my buddies ... building a lamp from the wires up ... hanging out at the mom-and-pop store in the old neighborhood. A reader might also remember meeting their very first childhood friend, or transitioning from parochial to public school.
For anyone who has ever been young, or grown up on a Giffin Avenue of your own, these stories were written for you.
Growing Up Giffin is a tremendously entertaining collection of short essays. Anyone who grew up in Pittsburgh in the 60s and 70s will be able to relate to these wonderfully nostalgic stories of coming of age in a small, close knit neighborhood. But the stories are universal, and you don't have to be from Pittsburgh to appreciate them. They capture the spirit of childhood adventure with humor and heart. You'll read stories of carefree summer days, bike riding, playing in open fields, street fairs, roller skating, sleeping out on a friend's porch, high school band, and many other subjects about growing up that will be familiar to most people. The book is even more relatable if you went to Catholic school. It covers the time period from early boyhood to the cusp of leaving for freshman year of college. It's an easy read, yet profound in it's adult perspective. I found myself laughing out loud often, and also moved by the characters and sentiment. Tim's structure and word choice skillfully allow the stories to build, and payoff the humor and other emotions in a satisfying way. Clever details vividly create a picture in your mind. These stories are as touching as they are hilarious. It's a special talent that can evoke such a range of emotions. And it has such a homey, friendly, unassuming tone that is a joy absorb. I feel like like I know Tim after reading this book. It’s a great book if you only have a few minutes and want to read a quick story. But I always found myself wanting to keep on reading after each story. I can't recommend it enough!
Great short essays by a former Mt. Oliver, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania resident. Brought back many memories since I grew up there, also.
What a pleasant surprise! What I expected to be a standard 'life was so much better when I was a kid' collection of stories went beyond that and brought to life not only the joys of growing up in that era but also some of the turmoil and hardships of those days. Thanks, Tim, for helping me remember the day that 'I walked 20 miles' (but I finished - haha!), the time I went downtown to the movies to see Jaws (one of the few times that a movie truly terrified me!) and the Rocket Ship to the North Pole. Even if you aren't from Pittsburgh, it is a delightful read AND the proceeds will help rejuvenate a still potentially great area.
This book brings back so many good memories from growing up not to far from Tim. I believe the content captures the best part of the "Greatest Generation" which was our parents who were born during the mid 1920's. The values that were instilled related to trust, honesty and integrity were taught not only at home but reinforced in the Catholic schools we attended. The stories of Transverse Park, and the care free and safe environment that were just blocks away from our home are something that still exists in pockets of American life. Our lives were grounded by a generation of individuals the knew the true meaning of family and the responsibility to part of something bigger, which were the communities that lived and proposed in each day. Thanks Tim for reminding me and Linda of the wonderful times of the past that have created the individuals we are today.
